Weekend Adventures Part 2: The Old Operating Theatre

by Julie Pennell | Feb 25, 2015 | across the ponderings, Travel

For someone who shudders at the thought of blood and can’t stand talking about anything medical, I think it’s pretty ironic that I ended up marrying a surgeon. When we read before bed (because yes, we’re old), I’ll be engaged in something by...

Weekend Adventures Part 1: Portobello Market

by Julie Pennell | Feb 23, 2015 | across the ponderings, british things, Travel

A few weeks ago, I met my friend Lauren in London, and she took me to her old stomping grounds in Notting Hill. It was later in the day, and unfortunately we had just missed all the action of Portobello Market. “You have to come back and experience it,”...

New York, I Love (and Miss!) You…

by Julie Pennell | Feb 10, 2015 | across the ponderings, new york city, Travel

When you live in New York, being away from the city for even just a long vacation leaves you feeling antsy and out of your element. You mean to tell me not every place in the world has cab drivers who tell you the meaning of life and all-you-can-drink brunch?...

Our First Snow in Oxford!

by Julie Pennell | Feb 3, 2015 | across the ponderings, british things, snow

I know this post will mean nothing to any of you reading from the Northeast or Chicago, but I am so excited to say we finally had our first snow in Oxford! Each morning, I wake up and open the curtains in our bedroom, taking a moment to look at the view. Quite often...

Got the cutest box of goodies in the mail to celeb Got the cutest box of goodies in the mail to celebrate the release of @zibbyowens’ fabulous new quarantine anthology “Moms Don’t Have Time To.”

My 11-month-old insisted on being the prop stylist for this photo, and I think he did a great job (although he was a little pushy about including the dinosaur. 🤷🏼‍♀️)

This book has been out for only a week, and I’ve already devoured the whole thing (its bite-sized chapters make it perfect for reading while the kids nap). An added bonus is that all the proceeds go to Covid-19 research ❤️

Congrats to Zibby and all the other authors featured! I think this book is going to be literary comfort food for so many right now.
Happy Mardi Gras! I MADE THIS! I have to admit I’m a little shocked that it didn’t come out looking like one of those Instagram vs reality fails since I’m typically a disastrous cook. But maybe 2021 is looking up? 🤞(Shout out to @delish for the super easy recipe!) I will be eating this all day and missing Louisiana.
Sorry to my husband. Valentine’s Day will foreve Sorry to my husband. Valentine’s Day will forever be overshadowed by my first book’s birthday 😂 🎂🥳 She’s 4 today, and I love her even more than the first day I saw her.

Just feeling nostalgic going through pics of the launch party at @powerhousearena — one of the happiest days of my life, right up there with my wedding. 💕 I share this special day with @emily_bestler, @laniebird5, @eliza_swift, & @joellehobeika who helped me bring this book — and my dreams — to life and to every reader who picked up the book. I love you all forever 😘
Celebrating 10 years since we started dating! Woul Celebrating 10 years since we started dating! Wouldn’t change a thing (okay except maybe I’d edit out the whole pandemic storyline, but I guess if it has to stay in, there’s no one else I’d rather be in quarantine with.) 💕📸: @amyseder #flashbackfriday
Remember my @atoosarubenstein letter? A few years Remember my @atoosarubenstein letter? A few years after we became friends I also reached out to *her* mentor with fan mail (who was I and how did I get so brave?)

Helen Gurley Brown was a legend and also the writer of the first writing book I ever bought: “The Writer’s Rules,” which I still keep in my bookcase and highly recommend. I was in high school and pored over it, learning lots of editorial tricks that I regularly use to this day.

I sent her a note and copy of my teen newspaper column, and (19 years ago to the week) she wrote me back with the words, “You are a good writer.”

I once ran into her by the elevator when I was an intern at CosmoGIRL! and told her the story. She held my hands in hers and said, “I just know we’re going to be good friends.” ❤️Another reminder to reach out to people you admire. Sometimes they might surprise you and cheer you on. (Swipe to see the full letter.)
GIVEAWAY! 🎉When one of your best friends writes GIVEAWAY! 🎉When one of your best friends writes a children’s book called “The Poopy Pants Dance,” you have to find the perfect backdrop for the ‘gram 🤣Congrats to @christiegriffin1 for this adorable book that my boys and I think is so silly and fun and we’ve read on repeat since we’ve had it.

I’m so incredibly proud of my friend that I want to buy this book for someone else. So if you have a kiddo in your life who might enjoy it, leave a comment below with the 💩 emoji (let’s just fully embrace the theme, you guys 😊), and I’ll draw a winner this weekend.
